Trost Elementary School has been in place since Fall 2004. The long-planned program began with two kindergarten classes and has grown each year as the initial kindergarten class proceeded to following grades and new kindergarten class began each year following.

Trost's mission statement, "Students at Trost will become lifelong learners who are prepared to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing technological, and culturally diverse global community" exemplifies the goals of the Dual Immersion Instruction (DLI) program.

The process begins each May with Trost's kindergarten round-up, where parents have the opportunity to apply for participation in the program. A lottery will determine placement in the DLI kindergarten classroom.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Began in the 2005-06 school year
Taught by certified, bilingual staff
Equal balance of native Spanish and native English speaking students
Half-day program where students will receive math and thematic based literacy instruction in Spanish 80 percent of the day and English 20 percent of the day
DLI students will receive equal amount of instruction in both languages by the fourth grade
BENEFITS:
High levels of proficiency
in both Spanish and English and eventually achieve above-grade level expectations in academic areas
Bilingual students are culturally competent, critical thinkers and have access to life opportunities that monolingual people do not have
Completes one of Trost's School-wide goals for Title IA
