iPad FAQ

Who Gets an iPad?

Each student in the Canby School District is issued an iPad in a protective case at the start of each school year or when a student enrolls mid-year. Each student is also issued a USB sync cable and charging adapter when they are first assigned a device.

What kind?

iPads are refreshed across the district in a routine cycle so that students are not provided an iPad older than four years.

Do students have to pay to receive an iPad?

No. No fees are required to utilize a 1:1 take-home iPad in any Canby school.

Does the iPad belong to the student?

No, the iPad and all associated equipment is the property of the Canby School District. Students and their caregiver(s) are responsible for ensuring the equipment is used, respected, and cared for in a manner aligning with the policies and rules of the classroom, school, and district.

When does a student give it back?

  • Students keep the cable and charging adapter during their time at a particular school but must turn them in at the conclusion of the sixth-grade, eighth-grade, and 12th-grade school years and when a student leaves the district.
  • Elementary and middle school students turn in their iPad at the end of each school year and when a student leaves the district. Whenever possible, at the start of a school year, a returning elementary or middle school student swill receive the same iPad they were assigned the previous school year.
  • High school students retain their iPad over the summer and they must turn them in when they graduate or leave the district.

What is the iPad for?

Canby School District issues iPads to provide students with digital curricula and to aid instruction. In one hand-held device, students have access to textbooks, a calculator, a word processor, encyclopedias, and so much more. We strongly believe that making appropriate technology available is essential to building Canby School District graduates who are ready for the opportunities of today’s world.

The iPad is not meant to be an entertainment device. Students should use their iPads, district-provided internet access, installed applications and all associated technology for the purpose of education and positive, knowledge-enhancing intent.

How do I know my student is using the iPad for educational purposes?

A Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) compliant filter is always active on all student devices, no matter where they connect to the internet. Students are not permitted to install unapproved apps, change settings, or otherwise use the device in a method unmonitored by the district. Students should expect no right to privacy in their use of their school-issued device.

We believe that when the device is in your home, your rules apply. If you already set limits on screen time and where and when devices can be used, you can apply those rules to the iPad. Some rules we’ve seen include:

  • Devices are only used in common areas where a parent or family member is present
  • Devices don’t go into bedrooms or bathrooms
  • Devices are charged/stored in common areas and don’t go into bedrooms overnight
  • No devices allowed during family time
  • At least a 2:1 ratio of non-tech activity (sports, reading, playing outside, practicing an instrument, etc.) to screen time

Common Sense Media provides hundreds of resources for students, parents, teachers and school staff regarding technology use. We invite parents/guardians to start here and review learning with technology and parent concerns to investigate further options for learning how to responsibly support technology use at home.

Can I request that a certain app be added to an iPad?

Yes. The district has a process for app requests. Please work with the student’s teacher or administrative office if you believe an app would provide benefit to instruction. Your school will work with the Teaching and Learning and Technology Departments to determine if the app can be added to student devices.

What happens if an iPad gets broken?

When a student device is damaged due to an accident or mistreatment, the student and/or caregiver need to notify their school immediately. If a damaged device cannot be easily repaired, a replacement device will be issued to the student one time during their enrollment in the school district. If a device is damaged for a second time during the student's district enrollment, the student will be issued a replacement device and be held responsible for the repair/replacement costs of their previous device. If repair exceeds the cost of a replacement, a fee of $300 will be assessed. Fees can be paid online, over the phone, or in person at the district office.

What happens if an iPad is stolen or lost?

When a student device is lost or stolen, the student and/or parent need to notify their school immediately. The district will disable the device and assist in determining the location of the device when possible. If a lost or stolen device cannot be recovered, a replacement device will be issued to the student one time during their enrollment in the school district. If a device is lost or stolen for a second time during the student's district enrollment, the student is responsible for the replacement cost of the device and its protective case at a fee of $300. The replacement device issued to the student may not match the lost/stolen device's age or condition. Fees can be paid online, over the phone, or in person at the district office.

What happens if the cable or charging adapter is damaged or lost?

If a student loses or damages a cable or USB charger, those items are available for purchase at the school front office. Approximate costs for sync cables and chargers are $5 and $8 respectively.
