Where are iPads being used?

1:1 programs are occurring in grades 6-12 across the district.

Why a 1:1 program?

Strategically, the move to iPads is directly related to a math curriculum adoption in grades 6-12. This adoption has occurred over the past two years and is one of our first programs to utilize an online textbook. As more learning resources transition to online formats, the move to a 1:1 program makes sense for students in CSD.

What type of iPads are being given to students?

iPad Air 2s, and fifth and sixth generation iPads are used across the district for the 1:1 program. Students will be issued one of these three models of iPad. The technical details, including screen-size and processor speed, for our newest iPads are here: www.apple.com/ipad-9.7/specs

Will I have to pay to receive an iPad?

No. In 2019, the school district announced the discontinuation of the insurance program. No fees are required to utilize a 1:1 take-home iPad in any CSD school.

What happens if an iPad gets broken?

We understand that accidents happen. The district will repair/replace a district-owned device that is damaged, lost, or stolen while under the responsible care of a student.

The district may limit the ability of student to use a device if damage or loss occurred due to lack of responsible care.

What happens if an iPad is stolen or lost?

The district will repair/replace a district-owned device that is stolen while under the responsible care of a student.

When a device is stolen, the school’s administration must be made aware and a police report must be filed. The district technology department will place the device in lost-mode which halts any and all use of the device.

Can families purchase an iPad from CSD?

The district offered an option to lease-to-own an iPad during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years. Due to lack of interest and high maintenance costs, this option is no longer offered. This district will honor the lease-to-own program for any family currently making payments.

Can students keep iPads over the summer?

Middle and high school students who are making payments on an iPad lease may keep their device over the summer. However, all other CSD-provided iPads must be turned into the school at the end of the school year.

If my student is moving schools next year, will they take their iPad with them?

In order to ensure that grade and curriculum-specific applications are installed properly, borrowed iPads will remain in the care of the original school. Your student will be issued a replacement iPad when they enter the seventh or ninth grades.

If your student used or is using the previously offered lease program to buy an iPad they will take their device with them to their new school.

Can my student bring their own iPad?

Yes, however, a BYOD (bring-your-own-device) must be an iPad compatible with iOS version 12 and have at least 5 GB of free space to accommodate instructional app installation. CSD uses a system that allows teachers to view iPad screens, collaborate with students, and prohibit specific activities while in the classroom. This system, known as Apple Classroom, requires iOS 12 to function. For the current school year, the district will permit any iPad Air or newer.

Receiving an Internet-enabled device is a big change. What resources are available to help understand online safety and appropriate technology use?

We believe that when the device is in your home, your rules apply. If you already set limits on screen time and where and when devices can be used, you can apply those rules to the iPad. Some rules we’ve seen include:

  • Devices are only used in common areas where a parent or family member is present
  • Devices don’t go into bedrooms or bathrooms
  • Devices are charged/stored in common areas and don’t go into bedrooms overnight
  • No devices allowed during family time
  • At least a 2:1 ratio of non-tech activity (sports, reading, playing outside, practicing an instrument, etc.) to screen time

Common Sense Media provides hundreds of resources for students, parents, teachers and school staff regarding technology use. We invite parents/guardians to start here and review learning with technology and parent concerns to investigate further options for learning how to responsibly support technology use at home.

What is the process for having educational apps installed on a non-district (BYOD) iPad?

Students who bring their own device will have it added to CSD’s mobile device management system. This system will automatically install necessary CSD instructional applications and settings. Students may remove their access to CSD’s system at any time, however, access is required for instructional application use.

Can I prevent my student from accessing specific websites or apps on their iPad?

Yes. We believe that our entire community has a say in what content is available to students. The district technology team asks parents/guardians to bring their specific concerns about websites/apps to their school administration. The technology team will work to ensure that apps and Internet content are reviewed to meet instructional, safety, and security standards.

Can I request that specific apps be added to my student’s iPad?

Yes. The district has a process for app requests. Please work with your student’s teacher or administrative office if you believe an app would provide benefit to instruction. Your school will work with the Teaching and Learning and Technology Departments to determine if the app can be added to student devices.

I have a device at home that’s not an iPad that my student can use, can they bring it to school instead of receiving an iPad?

No. CSD is committed to Apple technology for its robust creative and technical capabilities. Traditional laptops, Chromebooks, or Android tablets won’t properly run the apps that are necessary for our curriculum and instruction.

What happens if the charging adapter cord is lost or damaged?

Students will be provided a charging wall power adapter and sync cable when they are issued an iPad. Students are not required to turn in their power or cable until they leave the school at either sixth, eighth, or twelfth grade. If a student loses or damages a cable or USB charger, those items will be made available for purchase at the school front office, library, or school store. Approximate costs for sync cables and chargers are $5.00 each.
