2022 - 2023 Adoption Process Information

The 2022 - 2023 Health Adoption Committee had the following members:

  • 10 K-12 Classroom Teachers
  • 4 School Counselors and Instructional Specialists
  • 1 Building Principal
  • 2 District Nurses
  • 3 Parents
  • 1 Board Member

The committee reviewed instructional resources and practices in the district along with a review and professional learning around the state standards in order to make curriculum adoption recommendations to the School Board by May 2023.

The committee's goals were:

  • Engage in professional learning to deepen understanding of learning progressions within K-12 Health Standards.
  • Create a K-12 committee (staff and community members) to develop a clear process for communication of health instruction and options for students.
  • Research, review, and pilot instructional materials in order to select resources that support K-12 instruction alignment and ongoing curriculum development by May 2023.

The District reviewed and updated its curriculum, instructional practices, and classroom materials according to Board policy and Oregon State Statutes and Administrative Regulations. The School Board of Directors approved the adoption of The Great Body Shop for kindergarten through fifth grade students and Comprehensive Health Skills for sixth through twelfth graders.

Parent/Guardian Information and Exemption from Instruction

Parents, guardians and schools share a common goal: we want students of all ages to be healthy in all aspects of their lives.  As Health Educators we want to encourage families to ask their child what they are learning in health education class in all lessons. We also want to provide families with information, strategies, and resources to support their child in leading a healthy lifestyleAccording to Oregon Law (OAR 581-022-1440), parents can opt their children out of any or all sexuality education components. However, parents cannot opt their children out of the entire health curriculum without written documentation of a religious or disability-related reason.

Parent/Guardian Notification

A school-wide Parent/Guardian Notification regarding elementary health instruction will be sent out by your school administrator each year in the fall. In addition, teachers will send additional notification to parents prior to instruction in human sexuality and sexual abuse prevention education.

Materials Preview Process

Elementary (K-5)

  • Email your child’s teacher requesting to preview The Great Body Shop materials. Teachers can share instructions for how to access the resources digitally.
  • Parents/guardians can make an appointment at the Canby School District office to preview materials for Erin’s Law and the Great Body Shop.

Secondary (6-12)

  • Follow instructions in your child's syllabus to contact their teacher with questions about course content.
  • Parents/guardians can make an appointment at the Canby School District office to preview the curriculum for Erin’s Law and the textbook for Goodheart-Wilcox.

Exemption from Instruction

After previewing materials, if a parent/guardian would like to excuse their child from instruction, complete the Program Exemption Request Form and return it to your child’s school. The school will contact you to set up a meeting to plan for next steps.

Plan for Alternative Instruction:

  • If a student is opted-out of a portion of the instruction, the school will help ensure that appropriate alternative materials are available for the student.
  • If a student is opted out of the entire curriculum, the parent/guardian is responsible for providing alternative instruction that complies with the health education standards (OAR 581-021-0009).
